With a population estimated at 152 million people in 2010, Nigeria is one of the larger nations in the continent of Africa. The largest city Lagos is home to 11.4 million residents. Other major cities include the capital Abuja, Ibadan, Kano, Benin City, Port Harcourt, Zana and Maidugun with populations ranging from 1 to 3 million people. Nigeria's population was estimated to be growing at a rate of 2% in 2010.
Nigeria's GDP reflects the size of the population and was estimated to be $339 billion (US dollars) in 2010. This gives rise to significant opportunities for trade and industry particularly when you account for the considerable growth in GDP in recent years (estimated 6.1%). One third of this GDP can be attributed to agriculture and another third to industry.
Mineable resources in Nigeria are significant with reserves of oil and natural gas, iron ore, coal, zinc, tin and lead amongst other minerals. In 2006 mining of these minerals represented 37% of GDP.
Exports from Nigeria are estimated at 65.5 billion US dollars, 97% of which were fuels and other mining products. 38.3% of these exports went to the US, 21.8% to the EU, 9.9% to India, 6.8% to Brazil and 4% to Japan.
Imports into Nigeria totalled $29.5 billion most of which came from the EU (33.2%). Other significant trade partners include China and the US. Most of these imports were machinery, manufactured goods, transport and chemicals which represent 72% of all imports into Nigeria. For further information email us at africa@transvalair.com
