The population of Libya in July 2010 was estimated at 6.5 million. The two largest cities Tripoli and Benghazi, are located on the northern coast of Libya. These two cities house roughly one third of the nations total population. Other big cities include Misrata, Bayda and Zawiya. Annual population growth was estimated to be 2.1% in 2010.

Libya's Gross Domestic Product is high for such a small population at around $90 billion (US dollars). GDP per capita was as high as 15,000 US$ in 2008 but fell to 10,000 in 2009. However the latter is still significantly higher than many other African states.

Much of this GDP is generated through the export of petroleum and natural gas but also gypsum. Crude oil, refined petroleum, natural gas and some chemicals made up $34.2 billion (us dollars estimated) of the total in 2009

In terms of both imports and exports Italy is a significant trade partner with Libya which was once an Italian colony. Other trade partners for Libyan exports include Germany, Spain and France. Libya imported an estimated $22 billion (US dollars) worth of machinery, transport equipment, other manufactured goods and food. Significant trade partners for imports other than Italy include China, Turkey and Germany.
